Part of the Officers series:

Quick Answer

  • 10 fragments fuses a new officer; each star after that costs progressively more fragments and raises the officer's level cap and skill slots.
  • Breakthrough skills unlock at 5 stars — and then cost another ~50 fragments of that officer to actually enable.
  • Past 5 stars, officers open Unworldly stats: purple officers get one, and 6-star orange officers work with five Unworldly slots.
  • Remodel re-rolls unlocked Unworldly slots. You can lock slots to protect them — but a locked skill can never be re-rolled higher, so never lock a grade you still want to improve.
  • Unworldly skills level to 20, and that leveling is permanent and non-resettable — hold your skill books until your final skills are settled.

The Star Ladder

Officer progression has two axes that players constantly confuse. XP levels are the easy one — fed by Officer XP packs from world-map zombies, quests, and events, capped somewhere in the mid-50s. Stars are the one that matters, and they run entirely on fragments:

  1. Fusing: 10 fragments unlocks an officer you don't own.
  2. Star-ups: each subsequent star costs more fragments than the last, and each one raises the officer's level cap and opens skill slots. An officer whose stars lag is an officer whose levels and skills are both walled.
  3. The 5-star gate: breakthrough skills — Tifa's Death Bomber, Alexandria's Unyielding, Saki's First Aid — unlock here. And they aren't free at unlock: the documented pattern (from Loreline's breakthrough) is 5 stars plus roughly 50 additional fragments of that officer to switch the skill on.

That second cost is the planning trap. Players hit 5 stars, celebrate, then discover the breakthrough they were building toward needs another fifty fragments — which on a two-day-a-week rally rotation (the calendar) is weeks of patience. Budget for it before you commit an officer to the ladder.

Unworldly Stats: The 6-Star Layer

Past 5 stars the game opens its endgame stat system. Officially: purple officers unlock one Unworldly stat after 5-star, and you can remodel it. Orange officers at 6-star work with five Unworldly slots, and the community's cost-efficiency advice is to unlock all five before you start remodeling — re-rolling into a partially-open board wastes attempts.

Unworldly skills come in lettered grades (A, AA, and up), and the practical shape of an endgame officer is five slots holding the right skills at the highest grades you've managed to roll — things like cross-nation long-range attack for a war officer.

The remodel rules that save you

Remodel is the re-roll mechanic, and it has three sharp edges:

  1. Locking is permanent protection, not a pause. You can lock slots so a remodel doesn't touch them — but a locked skill can never be re-rolled to a higher grade. Lock an AA you'd happily upgrade to AAA and you've just capped that slot forever.
  2. You can't hold the same skill at two grades, which is exactly why the lock decision above is irreversible in practice.
  3. Results must be confirmed — a remodel doesn't auto-apply. Read what you rolled before accepting; the interface will happily let you approve a downgrade if you're clicking fast.

The community's temperament advice: remodel patiently, cap your attempts per session, and treat a good board as something you build over months rather than an evening.

The skill-book rule

Unworldly skills level to 20, and that investment is permanent — non-resettable. So: use XP books first, and hold your Unworldly skill books until your final skill set is locked in. Leveling a skill you later re-roll away is the single most expensive mistake available in the officer system, and it's entirely avoidable by waiting.

Who Deserves a Star Ladder

Given the fragment economics, the answer is brutally short: your core, and nobody else. For most accounts that's the Warfare Trinity plus Saki and Doc Gray, with a Drillmaster or two once your PvP life gets serious. Every fragment spent starring an officer you won't appoint in a real fight is a fragment stolen from a breakthrough you actually need.

The order that wastes nothing:

  1. Fuse and star your core toward 5 — the breakthrough gate is the milestone, not the number.
  2. Pay the breakthrough fragment cost for the skills that define them.
  3. Push to 6-star and open all five Unworldly slots before remodeling anything.
  4. Remodel patiently; lock only what you're certain about.
  5. Only then spend skill books on the board you've settled.
