Age of Origins Defense Research: The Branch You Should Not Finish
Why Defense research and wall towers decay to irrelevance in Age of Origins — the flat-damage problem, the few nodes worth taking, and what to fund instead.

Quick Answer
- Defense Technology raises defense tower stats and related defensive nodes.
- Completing this tree is not recommended, and that is close to a consensus position rather than a hot take.
- The mechanism: wall towers deal flat damage with no scaling. Their contribution is fixed while every army on your server keeps growing.
- Towers only matter in fights you were going to win anyway — a bubble trap, or an attacker far below you.
- Upgrade them slowly and cheaply with Black Market turret parts. Never gold, never speedups.
Taking the Position Plainly
Most of this handbook hedges where the data is unclear. This is not one of those cases: Defense research is the lowest-value branch in the Academy for almost every account, and you should not finish it.
That deserves an explanation rather than an assertion, because the branch looks perfectly reasonable from the outside. You are going to get attacked. Your city has walls and towers. Research that makes them stronger sounds like exactly the insurance a growing account wants.
The problem is how the towers work.
The Flat-Damage Problem
City wall towers deal flat damage — they do not scale. That single mechanical fact is the whole argument, and it produces a very specific decay curve.
In the early game, a fixed chunk of damage is a meaningful share of an incoming march, so towers genuinely contribute. Your neighbours' armies are small, and a raider losing real troops to your walls may decide you are not worth the trip. This is why the building priority guide says towers "help early" rather than dismissing them outright.
Then the server grows. Troop tiers climb toward T13, Military research compounds, officers get starred, equipment gets forged — and every one of those is a multiplier applied to the army hitting you. Your towers are still doing their fixed number. Against a coordinated rally in the second year of a server, that number is a rounding error on the battle report.
Defense research invests in the one part of your city that cannot keep up by design.
When Towers Do Matter
There is a narrow window where they earn their keep, and it is worth being precise about it: towers only affect fights that actually happen in your city, and those should mostly be fights you expect to win.
That means:
- Bubble traps — a city presenting as soft while holding massed allied reinforcements. Here the towers are a small bonus on top of a fight already decided by the garrison, and the real work is done by the ratios in the defense formation guide.
- Opportunistic raiders far below you — where the towers help finish a fight your garrison was already winning.
Notice what is not on that list: the serious attack. When a real rally lands, the outcome is decided by your garrison composition, your reinforcements, your officers, and your research — not by tower stats. And when you cannot win, the correct answer was never towers at all; it was a shield or an empty city, per the hide troops guide.
How to Handle Towers Without Wasting Anything
You do not have to ignore the system entirely. You have to stop treating it as an investment.
- Do not rush any of it. No gold, no speedups. This is the specific mistake the branch invites, because tower upgrades feel urgent right after you get raided.
- Pick up turret parts from the Black Market when they are cheap and convenient, and upgrade over time. Slow accumulation costs you nothing you needed elsewhere.
- Take Defense research nodes only where they gate something you actually want, or as genuine leftovers when every other branch is deep and the queue would otherwise idle.
- Spend the queue time on Development and Military instead — the two branches that never stop paying.
| Investment | Early game | Late game |
|---|---|---|
| Defense research and towers | Modest, real | Effectively nil — flat damage, growing armies |
| Garrison composition and officers | Real | Decisive |
| Military research | Real | Decisive, and permanent through every defeat |
| Shields and hidden troops | Decisive | Decisive |
What Actually Defends a City
If the goal is not getting farmed, the levers that work are all somewhere else on this site, and they are worth naming so this guide is not purely negative:
- Do not be home. Marching, gathering in safe territory, garrisoning with allies, or sitting in a 30-minute Ruins rally removes your army as a target entirely.
- Do not be fat. Spend resources down before logging off; everything above your protected cap belongs to whoever wins.
- Be expensive to attack. A deliberately built garrison with a mitigation officer like Alexandria anchoring it makes the attempt unprofitable, which is the real goal — see the defense formation guide.
- Shield the events you are not contesting. The full budgeting logic is in the shield guide.
None of those are tower stats. All of them work at every stage of the game.
The One-Line Summary
Take Defense research last, take it shallow, and take it only when your queue would otherwise sit empty. The branch is not a scam — it is simply attached to a system whose contribution is fixed in a game where everything attacking you is not. Put the queue into Development and Military, and put your actual defense into shields, hidden troops, and a garrison worth reinforcing.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Is Defense research worth it in Age of Origins?
- Not as a priority, and completing the tree is not recommended. Defense Technology raises defense tower stats, and wall towers deal flat damage with no scaling — so their contribution shrinks toward irrelevance as every army on the server grows.
- Why are wall towers useless in Age of Origins late game?
- Because their damage is flat rather than scaling. A tower doing a fixed amount of damage was meaningful against an early-game march and is a rounding error against a late-game rally, no matter how much you invested in it.
- Should I upgrade defense towers in Age of Origins?
- Slowly and cheaply, if at all. Pick up turret parts from the Black Market when they are convenient and upgrade over time. Never spend gold or speedups on them — that is the specific mistake this branch invites.
- What should I research instead of Defense in Age of Origins?
- Development first, then Military. Development discounts every timer you will ever start and Military applies to every fight you will ever take. Both keep paying at a point where tower stats have stopped mattering entirely.
